Hobo polar bears are on the loose

With worrying about the economy collapsing and not having two dimes to rub together, DC residents now have to worry about homeless polar bears walking around. It turned out it was just a prank to draw attention to global warming. Boing Boing reports the artist Mark Jenkins was behind it and has a pretty good track record of pulling pranks.

Chesapeake crab fishermen get a bailout too

It's not just Wall Street that is about to get a government bailout, but Chesapeake crab fishermen too. More on it at Cato-at-Liberty blog. The head of the Maryland Watermen's Association, Larry Simns said the federal deal is not a handout because it will be used to put fishermen back to work restoring the Bay, plant trees, etc. Ah, I see, this is completely different.

Sarah Palin as a bad Disney movie

There's been some great political spoof videos this campaign season, but this CollegeHumor.com video that imagines Sarah Palin as a bad Disney movie is among the best. I usually embed the video in the post, but the embed link was broken.

Washington Nationals set the wrong kind of record

The Washington Nationals will wrap up their first season at their new ballpark in just a few days. I doubt many in Washington, DC will even notice that the season is coming to a close. This is not a surprise, given that the Redskins are winning and the Nationals are in last place in the NL East. Everyone who followed the team knew it was a rebuilding year, but I didn't expect the Nationals to drop off the radar completely halfway through the season. The Washington City Paper reports that the National's new ballpark will have the worst attendance for its first season since the Metrodome opened in 1982.

The owners overestimated the draw of the new ballpark. Yes, it has worked in the past. They saw what happened with Camden Yards' wildly successful opening and hoped to duplicate it here. At the time, the Orioles were the only game in town, literally. There were many factors which led to record poor attendance at Nationals Park: the lack of restaurants and bars within walking distance of the stadium, high ticket and concession prices, and no marqee stars on the team, all contributed to the Nationals being nonexistent in the DC sports scene.

Oktoberfest in DC

After my Austria vacation last summer, I became more interested in German-style beer and different styles of beer. Now in order to be a full-fledged beer connoisseur, I had to participate in Oktoberfest, the ultimate destination for beer enthusiasts. Since I live in a major metropolitan area, there are plenty of Oktoberfest events to choose from and the Washingtonian After Hours blog complied all of them in a convenient list. The Washingtonian left off their list the fun Oktoberfest event I went to last fall in Shirlington, Virginia. Fortunately the Capitol Brewing Company is hosting the event again this October 4th. Some more information at their site here.

Some offbeat humor

I'm back from my summer hiatus and here to provide more interesting blog posts.

Let's start it off with two great items from Boing Boing. If you're looking for the ultimate pro-family candidate, look no further than Nurglon. She is described as folksy, white and a mother of 5 million.

The U.S. government is constantly keeping abreast of online places terrorists use to plan attacks. The Pentagon has concluded the online multiplayer game, World of Warcraft could be one of those places. I knew that orgre was really a terrorist!
